URGENT: NATIONAL BANK OF SERBIA REVOKES ALTA BANKA’S OPERATING LICENCE

On 31 October 2026, the National Bank of Serbia (NBS) officially announced that it has revoked the operating licence of ALTA banka a.d. Beograd.

The decision was adopted by the Executive Board of the National Bank of Serbia.

The licence was revoked because of a serious deterioration in the bank’s financial position and liquidity problems.

According to the regulator’s official statement, the NBS had previously carried out inspections and taken measures to improve the bank’s liquidity. However, ALTA banka’s financial condition deteriorated significantly, and there was a risk of further deterioration and of harm to depositors’ interests.

The regulator therefore decided to revoke the licence in order to protect depositors and safeguard the stability of the country’s financial system.

What happens to clients’ money?

The Deposit Insurance Agency of Serbia (Agencija za osiguranje depozita) is required to make insured deposits available for payout within seven business days.

Serbia operates a state-run deposit insurance scheme:

  • Deposits are covered up to EUR 50,000 per depositor per bank.
  • Coverage extends to individuals, sole proprietors (preduzetnici), and micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.
  • Amounts above EUR 50,000 may be claimed in the bank’s bankruptcy proceedings.

The court will appoint the Deposit Insurance Agency as bankruptcy administrator in the bankruptcy proceedings against ALTA banka.

ALTA banka clients are advised to follow official announcements from the NBS and the Deposit Insurance Agency on how funds will be repaid.

This is particularly important for sole proprietors and companies that use ALTA banka accounts for their day-to-day operations.
